CLASS DESCRIPTION:
This 3-hour introductory course establishes a systematic approach to troubleshooting when your bike won’t start. Ride away with the confidence to perform simple routine and preventative maintenance but also know when a professional’s experience is required. This course will cover basic motorcycle component identification;
Battery, start button, fuses, spark, spark plugs, gas, loose wires, coils, starter solenoid (relay), ignition, fuel injection, carburetors, fuel lines, gas flow, filters, etc.
While there may be many different factors to consider, knowing small facts about your motorcycle can help. For example: when was the last time you started it, how old is the bike, when was it last maintained, how old is the battery, did I have the battery on a tender, how long has it been sitting, how old is the gas, is it the motor, etc.
Answers to these questions will help determine the order of checks and/or their direction. While the concepts here can be altered and are in no specific order, it is intended to provide an introductory systematic approach. Please consider these guidelines in conjunction with your owner’s manual or service manual for proper start-up protocol—it’s often the most basic element of the motorcycle that riders overlook.
Similarly, there can be many factors to consider that are outside of the scope of this workshop and that are too long to list each time there is a “no start.” Some examples can be based on location, such as on the coast or in high elevation, dusty roads, cold weather, diesel in your motor, a rat’s nest, and many other factors. The focus will be on some rudimental checks that should get you by. So, knowing basic things like how long you’ve had this problem and the climate is key.
